The second day purposefully heads for the heights to cross over the barrier of the central fells into Borrowdale. Fortunately an easy walk through Grasmere village, home to Wordsworth and inspiration to Coleridge, and then a steady climb up the old Victorian tourist route to Easedale Tarn breaks you in gently. The Scafell Hotel in Rosthwaite is situated almost at the foot of Great Gable and the Scafell Massif and is surrounded by stunning views. It's a perfect place to relax and enjoy another treasure of the Lake District; Jennings ales, brewed with pure Lakeland water in the neighbouring town of Cockermouth (you must set aside some time for a brewery tour!).
Before setting off please make sure you plot the suggested route on OS maps and pack a compass. They are essential for a safe, enjoyable day in the hills!
