Nestling in the lea of Carrock Fell, sheltered by its own woods and pastures, Bannest Hill has uninterrupted views of the Lakeland fells, the Pennines and the distant hills of the Scottish Borders.
The cottage offers a high standard of accommodation and is open most of the year.
In this unique rural setting, within the National Park, you can walk onto Caldbeck Common from your door and enjoy the abundant wildlife including many species of birds, our colony of red squirrels and the ponies that roam the common. We are within easy reach of the Osprey nest at Bassenthwaite lake.
The cottage is surrounded by gardens and pasture in a very peaceful and relaxing setting but is within easy driving distance of all the popular tourist centres of the Lakes, Eden Valley, Hadrian's Wall and the Scottish Borders. It is ideal for a relaxing holiday or short break at any time of year.
If you are seeking an activity holiday or break there are many strenuous walks you can take on the fells, right from your door. Hang-gliding is popular from Carrock Fell and the many quiet roads nearby are ideal for cycling. We are close to the Coast to Coast route and Cumbria Way. For golfers Keswick and Silloth are excellent courses nearby.
We are located between the ancient attractive villages of Hesket Newmarket and Mungrisdale. Hesket Newmarket has a pub with its own brewery attached serving award-winning real ales. It has a village shop with post office and tea room.
There are restaurants at The Mill Inn, Mungrisdale and at The Crown in Hesket. The farm next to ours offers local meats of a high standard.
The cottage dates back to at least the 17th century and has been used as a shepherd's house. It is Tastefully furnished with many original features and can accommodate 1-3 people.
On the ground floor is a comfortable beamed living area, a well-equipped newly fitted kitchen with slate-tiled floor, and a shower room with a large walk-in shower.
Upstairs is a large family bedroom with a double and single bed and oak beams. This room can be reconfigured into a single and double bedroom with their own separate access, if required.
Duvets, blankets, teal towels and clean fresh bed-linen are provided with all services included in the price.
A newly built annexe provides secure undercover cycle storage and laundry facilities including a washer dryer and classic ceiling hung clothes airer. There is an outside tap for washing boots and cycles.
If you require provisions on arrival or during your stay let us know in advance? The annexe has a freezer for storing ready meals and any other items you may need.
Modern communications include satellite TV/DVD and free WiFi for guests.
Why not relax after a long day out and sit in the garden, take in the amazing views and enjoy looking at the stars on a warm summer evening.
You will have a good chance of seeing a red squirrel from the colony which has lived in our woods for at least 30 years.
Unfortunately we are unable to accept dogs in order to protect the squirrels.
Private parking is adjacent to the cottage.
