Newby Bridge & Cartmel loop at Newby Bridge
The fortunes of High Newton have changed dramatically since the opening of the bypass: now the village is no longer divided by a very busy road and there are many attractive stone houses, a good pub and a fine café at the architectural salvage centre at Yew Tree Barn. The ride heads south to the lovely village of Cartmel with its stunning Priory. It would be easy to link this ride to the one that heads south down to Humphrey Head. Turning north from Cartmel, go past the racecourse, climbing steadily to Seatle then descending with fine views towards lake Windermere. There are more refreshment opportunities in Newby bridge, located close to where the lake becomes the River Leven. In Staveley you have the opportunity of a side trip to Fell Foot Park where there is a café by the lake. The main route follows a series of cyclepaths and quiet lanes back to High Newton.
