Relief Carving in Hardwoods at Quirky Workshops @ Greystoke Cycle Cafe
On his Greystoke days Alister arrives in a large van weighed down with 3 workbenches which are lovingly extracted and moved under canopies outside the Cyclists barn (if it looks like rain).
Four people to each bench and plenty of space still, and so solid you wouldn't know others were chiselling away. Next out comes the wide selection of woods he brings for people to choose from - sycamore, ash, oak, birch - many people opt for house name boards but other items are carved as well - numbers and sayings: "anything is possible- time allowing - in the day"
Alister Neville has been carving exciting designs in to hardwoods for many years. I first encountered him during a school garden design project. Sadly some trees had to be removed/ reduced and we were persuaded to leave the trunks in situ and allow Alister loose on them. He arrived armed with an array of tools, ladders, scaffold and more (some of the boughs were high). Within days the tree trunks were teeming with engraved/ carved animals of all shapes and sizes climbing up and creeping down or sitting quietly just watching, squirrels, mice, owls, rabbits, foxes, badgers, pine martins, you name it and Alister can carve it within the existing wood of a tree - quite brilliant. See his blog www.alisterneville.blogspot.com.
