Yewdale and Tarn Hows at Coniston
Yewdale, Arnside Intake, Tarn Hows and Monk Coniston make up an intricate network of small valleys on the
North side of Coniston; collectively they are widely regarded as making up some of the most romantic scenery in the Lake District. Most people plump for a quick walk around Tarn Hows when they explore the area which is wholly understandable as its image is so well known, having been reproduced all over the world gracing everything from chocolate box covers to the pages of international magazines. The area though is about so much more than just Tarn Hows and a longer walk around it pays huge dividends.
Woodland, dashing becks and tranquil lakes set against a back drop of craggy knolls and distant high mountains are the signature of this part of the fells but each of these elements are slightly dispersed. To bring them together a walk out from Coniston along the new cycle track through Yewdale and then a return back over the ancient tracks and bridleways of High Arnside, Tarn Hows and Monk Coniston will get you into all the intimate corners and to all the best view points. The route outlined follows well-defined paths and tracks, and most junctions are obvious which makes it an ideal walk for those new either to the Lake District or to fell walking. However there are places where you will need map and compass to cross check route alignment.
