Lakes Aquarium
We are delighted to announce that Lakes Aquarium will be re-opening on Saturday 13th February 2010 which coincides with the completion of the first phase of refurbishment following the floods experienced in November last year.
Oscar's, our superb cafe with stunning views across the lake and fells will also be open daily.
The Quay cafe and gift shop was worst hit during the floods and this will be re-opening later in the year. Plans are underway to completely revamp the building offering visitors something new to experience in 2010.
The award winning Aquarium of the Lakes has now become the Lakes Aquarium with all new features allowing you to visit the lakes of the world along with those a little closer to home, making it a captivating centrepiece to the Lake District.
Set off from a Lake District mountain top and follow the tranquil water flow to find jumping trout and river bank creatures. Leap over the paddy fields to Asia, homeland of our delightful and mischievous otters. Your journey warms up as you forage your way through our themed areas of Africa, the Americas and our amazing tropical jungle.
Walk through our incredible underwater tunnel, home to the breath taking diving ducks!
Interact with hippos, crocodiles and sharks in the worlds first virtual dive bell. Ask questions watch them feed, you can even strip them down to their skeletons.
The Lake Windermere collection of creatures includes one of Cumbria's most iconic - the Artic Char. This fish was one of the first to enter the lakes after the last ice age and has eveloved and survived the test of time. As a glacial fish, it seeks out the coldest water within the lakes in which it lives, typically the deepest waters. For this reason it is seldom seen by the general public. Lakes Aquarium has a collection of Char that visitors can not only watch, but come to fully apreciate, thanks to an informed education programme delivered by our dedicated team talks.
After a great time learning about fish of the Lakes and wider world visit Oscars restaurant which offers stunning panoramic views of Lake Windermere and a mouth watering menu.
We look forward to welcoming you soon.
