Ullswater

The main reason for Ullswater's appeal is immediately evident from whichever direction it is approached. The lake, as it comes into view, is seen against a breathtaking backdrop of mountain scenery. It is a truly dramatic picture, as you see a shoreline of green fields, woodlands and sheer rock faces rise from the lake's mirrored surface. It is not surprising that Ullswater inspired William Wordsworth, one of England's greatest poets, to write his most famous poem after he discovered multitudes of wild daffodils along the lakeshore. Steamers have sailed the lake since 1855 originally carrying mail, provisions and passengers. Nowadays sit back, relax and absorb the spectacular scenery on board one of the steamers. Boating centres and marinas nestle unobtrusively on the edge of the lake, perfect locations to become skilled in water-based activities. Many of the Lake District's most famous fell walks have their starting point from around Ullswater, including the magnificent trek to Helvellyn's summit via Striding Edge. Around the periphery of the lake there are many delightful low-level trails, leading through beautiful countryside where many discoveries await, from cascading waterfalls including the spectacular Aira Force, to herds of wild red deer and the occasional red squirrel.
