Sheila Fell: Cumbrian Painter By Cate Haste
Author of 'Sheila Fell: A Passion for Paint', Haste is a writer and television documentary director/producer, working mainly on biography and historical subjects. Her books include a biography of Prime Minister's spouses, 'The Goldfish Bowl' (with Cherie Blair); 'Clarissa Eden: A Memoir' (editor), books on First World War propaganda and a history of sexual mores. She was a director/producer on television series including 'Cold War', 'The Churchills' and 'End of Empire'.
In this lecture, Haste examines the life and work of expressionist landscape painter Sheila Fell (1931-1979). Fell drew her inspiration from the Cumbrian landscape of her childhood. Her poetic vision focused not on the picturesque, but on the interdependence of land, people and work and the struggle for survival against the fierce unpredictability of nature.
