Blackwell is one of England's most important surviving houses from the turn of the 20th century. It is a superb example of arts and crafts movement architecture. It occupies a stunning position and has recently been restored and opened to the public as a gallery for craft and applied arts. There is also a tearoom for lunch; on sunny days you can eat on the terrace overlooking Lake Windermere.

You can either drive around the southern tip of Lake Windermere or catch the Hawkshead ferry across the lake and follow signs to Grizedale Forest. Here you can walk a number of sculpture trails around the forest, very peaceful and relaxing or if the weather isn't good head around to Brantwood on the east side of Coniston. Brantwood is the former home of John Ruskin and is the most beautifully positioned house in the Lake District. Explore the estate and gardens. The bookshop, restaurant and the gallery make for a lovely afternoon outing.

While living in Dove Cottage from 1799 - 1808, William Wordsworth wrote the most famous and best-loved of his poems including, “I wandered Lonely as a Cloud” and Dorothy Wordsworth wrote her, “Grasmere Journals”. Come and see what inspired them, the beautiful landscape and their simple way of life.

Take an entertaining guided tour of Dove Cottage and hear about the Wordsworths’ daily life and stories about their famous visitors.

Entry includes a visit to the Wordsworth Museum and Art Gallery to experience changing displays and exhibitions of historic artefacts, original manuscripts and wonderful pictures by artists from the famous to the obscure.

This hub of art, literature and creativity has a programme of exhibitions and events from craft workshops and free childrens' activities to fine art, photography and poetry.

By Bus: Hop on the regular 599 open top service from Bowness, Windermere and Ambleside. Sit back, relax and admire the stunning views across the Lakes. The 555 also runs regularly between Keswick, Grasmere, Windermere and Kendal. The bus stops just across the Road from Dove Cottage.

By Bike: You can bike from Rydal to Dove Cottage on the Coffin Trail bridleway. This a mainly off-road, relatively flat route which starts at on eof Wordsworths other former residences. The 800 (Windermere to Whinlatter) bike bus also stops near Dove Cottage and carries up to 12 bikes, so can hop off at Rydal and Bike, then bus back. There are cycle parking stands near the attraction's restaurant.

On Foot: There is an easy and safe two-minute walking route from Grasmere to Dove Cottage along Stock Lane. There is also a lakeside path or the Coffin Trail Bridleway which links Grasmere to Rydal near Ambleside. Both are fairly easy-going routes with great views.

By Car: Leave the M6 at jct 36, follow signs for Kendal, Windermere and Ambleside. Dove Cottage, the Wordsworth Museum and Art Gallery is located on the A591, the main Kendal to Keswick road through the Lake District.

Parking : with charge

Public Transport : 8 miles from Windermere station

Full disabled access is available to the Wordsworth Museum and Art Gallery. As Dove Cottage is an historic building, we have been unable to make provision for disabled access. However most wheelchairs will find the ground floor accessible and there is a virtual tour of the cottage available at the information point in the Wordsworth Museum.
