The long unbroken barrier of the Pennine hills defines the area known as the East Fellside, accessible by vehicles at only one point, where the A686 wends its way up the Hartside Pass and on to Alston.
The steep zig-zagging climb with its rewarding views over the Eden Valley was recently voted one of the ten most scenic routes in the world by the Automobile Association.
