Grassed area next to the river with an 18-hole putting green (open mid April-mid September). The area was once a tenterground, where cloths were stretched out to dry on wooden frames.
Nobles Rest/Maude's Meadow
A peaceful grassed area with a woodland backdrop, ideal for picnics and quiet relaxation. Located in the heart of Kendal (at the end of Maude Street).
Castle Hill
The castle and its surrounding parkland were bought by Kendal Corporation in 1897 (along with Abbot Hall and its adjoining park) and opened as a public park to mark Queen Victoria's diamond jubilee. Glorious views can be enjoyed in all directions with a panoramic panel identifying the circling fells. Public footpaths link to the town in all directions. Parking available on Castle Drive.
Serpentine Woods
A myriad of paths lead through this steep-sided wood, culminating at The Heights for panoramic views over the Lake District fells. The wood contains remnants of Victorian landscaping including a summerhouse, ‘fairy glen' and wishing well. An enjoyable Alphabet Trail can be followed through the wood, starting from the footpath next to Fellside School - look out for various objects beginning with each letter of the alphabet. A saleable leaflet is available from Kendal Tourist Information Centre.
Scout Scar
Magnificent views over the Lyth Valley and Morecambe Bay can be experienced by walking along the edge of the limestone escarpment to the west of Kendal. The path leads to the Mushroom, a domed shelter with a diorama of the Lakeland Fells laid around the inside rim. Parking is just off the Underbarrow Road at SD 488 924.
