Backbarrow Furnace
Backbarrow Furnace was not only the first blast furnace to be built in the north of England, but also the last to close in 1965.
John Wilkinson
The great ironmaster, John Wilkinson of Backbarrow, made his own coffin - out of iron!
William Fell
St Anne's Church in Haverthwaite has a fascinating gravestone to William Fell (died 1852), a soldier of the 52nd Light Infantry, who was born at Brow Edge. His headstone records that he fought at Pombal, Almeida, on the plains of Condillia, at Sabugal, Busaco and Fuentes d'Onor. He survived the siege of Ciudad Rodrigo, and was ‘severely wounded' at Badajoz. He recovered to fight at Salamanca, Vittoria and Orthes but was ‘dangerously wounded' at the latter. It is unclear whether he died from these injuries or of natural causes.
A Princess
A princess was buried at Finsthwaite Church on 16 May 1771. She was born Clementina Johannes Sobiesky Douglass but no-one really knows who she was - a Polish princess or perhaps the illegitimate daughter of Bonnie Prince Charlie?
Crake Valley Croquet Club
Crake Valley Croquet Club holds the world record for the most croquet hoops scored in 24 hours - 402 (10-11 June 2000).
