dalton in furness, askam, marton & lindal...

From ancient capital to mining community, Dalton-in-Furness has seen great changes throughout its long history.

In medieval times Dalton was the administrative centre of Furness, with strong links to nearby Furness Abbey.

Oddities

Furness or Far Ness?

The name ‘Furness' is derived from ‘Far Ness' (or ‘distant headland') - its remoteness being one of the main reasons why the monks chose to build an abbey here.

Oldest Book Club
The Dalton Book Club is believed to be the oldest in the world, with a continuous record of meetings since 1764, and still flourishing today!
Train Disappearance
In 1892 a railway engine disappeared into a subsidence hole near Lindal, never to be seen again!
Stray Animals
A well-preserved pinfold at Goose Green (near the Brown Cow Inn) was used for impounding stray animals that were only released to their owners on payment of a fine to the ‘pinder'.
