Eden Benchmarks

Ten carved stone sculptures (which also function as seats) that can be found along the length of the River Eden from Mallerstang to Rockcliffe and commissioned to commemorate the 2000 millennium. The sculpture at Appleby, called ‘The Primrose Stone' was sculpted by Joss Smith from St Bees sandstone. Booklet from the East Cumbria Countryside Project.

Andy Goldsworthy pinfolds

Two of Andy Goldsworthy cone pinfolds can be found in the Appleby area - at Bolton and Crosby Ravensworth. Both are on sites of old pinfolds, where stray animals were once penned until their owners released them on payment of a ‘pinder' or fee, and each contains a stone cone. Bolton pinfold is on the minor road leading to Colby and Appleby. Crosby Ravensworth pinfold is opposite the Methodist chapel at the southern end of the village beside the footpath to Bank Bridge. A free leaflet showing the locations of all the sheepfolds is available from Appleby TIC. www.sheepfoldscumbria.co.uk
