Morecambe Bay and the Duddon Estuary are one of Britain's great landscapes, an unspoilt place where the sea meets the sky.

A short journey from Manchester and Liverpool is a place of light and space, where outstanding beaches and coastal scenery meets the Lake District fells. A place with unique wildlife and habitats, coastal walking, and cycling trails.

A great place for outdoor adventures, the Bay is one of the best places in the UK for a range of high adrenalin activities from sailing, to powered paragliding, windsurfing, mountain biking, horseriding, and kitesurfing. It is also home to distinctive local food, high quality accommodation and a vibrant culture and nightlife.

Morecambe Bay and the Duddon Estuary stretches from Haverigg in the north to Fleetwood in the south, taking in towns like Barrow, Ulverston, Grange-over-Sands, Lancaster and of course Morecambe itself. It includes some wonderful wildlife habitats, historic promenades, hills and headlands, coastal trails, areas of industry and naturally, the ebb and flow of the tide. It is a space and place that demands an emotional response; it is valued and loved. And it is still a quiet unspoilt place where you can escape from the hustle and bustle of modern life to recharge your batteries and refresh your soul. The headlands and promenades offer spectacular views; the hardy and adventurous can take a guided walk across the sands; and everyone can look up across the sand and mud flats towards the majesty of the Lake District or the Bowland Fells.

Activities in Morecambe Bay

more adrenalin

Morecambe Bay is one of the finest places in the UK to take part in kitesports, with facilities and support for everyone from beginners to the hardiest of kitesurfers. Morecambe Bay has two great locations at Barrow and Fleetwood to take part in, or watch, kitesports.

There is also fantastic sea kayaking around Walney Island but you should take advice from the experts as it requires careful tidal planning. Cumbria Canoeists have a useful site www.cumbriacanoeists.org.uk. There are also activity providers who offer climbing, scrambling, horse riding, sailing, diving, walking and cycling. The Bay really does have an activity for everyone.

more beauty

Morecambe Bay has some of the most beautiful walks in Britain. The Bay offers places for all fitness levels with never to be forgotten views. Perhaps the most memorable way to experience the Bay is to take a guided walk across the Sands with the 'Queen's Guide' Cedric Robinson. The guided walks take place from May to September each year (but don't attempt this without a guide, it is too dangerous!).

Some of the best views can be accessed at Arnside Knott, Hampsfell Hospice, Hoad Hill and Humphrey Head. The Bay's communities are situated conveniently for walkers to also enjoy the fine local food, and quality accommodation on offer.

Morecambe Bay is also a great place to unwind, relax and generally chill out. Relax somewhere special like Walney Island, or Piel Island with its castle and pub, Sandscale Haws north of Barrow, Humphrey Head, Jack Scout Cove, near Silverdale or Pilling Sands east of Fleetwood.

The Bay offers opportunities for a range of amazing wildlife experiences, like watching the oystercatchers and other waders march up the shore at Hest Bank, Bolton-le-Sands, in front of the advancing tides.
