St BeesSt Bees

The magnificent, mile-long, sandy beach at St Bees is one of the best on the whole Western Lake District coast and was named a Seaside Award Beach in 2005 in recognition of its cleanliness. It's great for making sandcastles and paddling and there is lots of fun to be had exploring tidal rock pools too. The wide promenade along this popular beach, which is the start of the famous Wainwright 'Coast to Coast walk, has good wheelchair access, toilet facilities and a pleasant children's play area.
St Bees Head rising to a height of over 300 ft has an RSPB bird reserve with one of the largest colonies of sea birds on the west coast of England, and is the only place in England where Black Guillemot breed. The sandstone cliffs looking across to the Isle of Man support an interesting array of flora and fauna. In the pretty town full of character sandstone buildings, St Bees Priory Church stands out with its magnificent Norman doorway. The town is easy to get too with its own railway station, bus services and easy access by car.
