Orton, Tebay & the Lune Valley...

The village of Orton stretches languidly in all directions but never loses sight of its focal centre, where several roads and footpaths converge.

Elizabeth Gaunt

In 1685 Elizabeth Gaunt of Newbiggin became the last woman to be burnt alive at Tyburn in London, one of many condemned to death by the notorious Judge Jeffries. Her ‘crime' was concealing a rebel from Monmouth's rebellion in her house, who subsequently betrayed her to the authorities. He was pardoned for his treachery, while she was burned for her charity.

St Oswald's church

St Oswald's church at Ravenstonedale once offered the right of sanctuary to anyone who could ring the church bell before they could be arrested.
