Morning

Drive from Melmerby to Nenthead along the A686/A689, which is described by the AA as one of the 10 best drives in the world. Nenthead Mines Heritage Centre - Prepare to launch on a voyage of discovery at Nenthead Mines.

Lunch

Afternoon

Head towards Alston, England's highest market town. South Tynedale Railway is a narrow gauge railway which will take you on a scenic tour have the cameras ready! Drive back to Langwathby along the A686 and take the turning for Salkeld to take a tour of the Water Mill and tea room. Continue along the road to stop at Long Meg and Her Daughters, the largest bronze age stone circle in Cumbria.

South Tynedale Railway

Enjoy a scenic ride through the beautiful South Tyne valley from Alston to Kirkhaugh or Lintley.

Evening

Drive back to Penrith along the A686 and unwind after all the days sightseeing at the wonderful North Lakes Hotel in Penrith.

South Tynedale Railway

Enjoy a scenic ride through the beautiful South Tyne valley from Alston to Kirkhaugh or Lintley. Many of our trains are hauled by a vintage steam locomotive and some have a buffet car service too. The round trip will take about an hour and a half through lovely Pennine scenery. Catch sight of deer, look out for soaring birds of prey; you may even see a red squirrel. Leave the train for a walk on the South Tyne Trail. Bring a picnic or sample our cafe at Alston station where there is free parking and a gift shop just minutes from the town centre.
