Derwentwater

Derwent Water is a local beauty spot that is frequented by walkers who hike around the eastern shore of this quiet lake.

Drive south along the east of Derwentwater, into the beautiful Borrowdale Valley or alternatively leave the car behind in Keswick and take the Honister Rambler bus (until 1st Nov) from the bus station. You can enjoy the best views of the fantastic countryside on the way to Honister slate mine, the last working slate mine in England. If you dare, there are tours which take you deep underground or try the new exciting Via Ferrata! Drop over the pass and down to the impressive valley which holds Buttermere village. The 4 mile walk around the lake takes you past waterfalls, forests, walk through a cave, see lakeland herdwick sheep grazing and don't forget to treat yourself to homemade ice cream from the farmhouse. Great for all ages!

The last working slate mine in England. Guided mine tours deep underground, browse the visitor centre. Learn the history of the best and most beautiful Honister Green Slate.
 

Buttermere Lake

Buttermere is ringed by the crags and peaks of Haystacks, Feetwith Pike and others. The 4 mile walk around the lake boasts impressive views.

Events and activities for children throughout the year, and open workshops for adults to experiment with the pencils under the guidance of professional artists. Finally relax in Sketchers Coffee shop for a light lunch, scone and Lakeland cream or a freshly ground cappuccino. An all weather attraction for the whole family to enjoy.
