Nothing in Britain surpasses the grandeur of Lakeland’s central mountains. The route fashioned by Emperor Hadrian’s Roman legions in the first century AD. Over the Wrynose and Hardknott passes, the steepest in England, pausing to view the extensive remains of Hardknott Roman Fort, before descending to lovely Eskdale.

Lunch at the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway station of Dalegarth. Fellbites Eatery offers everything from a latte or a cuppa, a wide selection of home-baked cakes, and tasty snacks, to more substantial meals.
