After a comfortable night at Lindeth Howe Hotel which Beatrix Potter and her family rented as a holiday home, year after year. So now, let's start at one of the best and most popular family attraction's in the Lake District - The World of Beatix Potter, in Bowness on Windermere. Until 2 Nov, why not have a really different day out by using the Cross Lakes Experience and catch the special ferry from Pier 3 at Bowness and then the Mountain Goat 525 bus which meets the ferry? You can get dropped off right at Hill Top at Near Sawrey too and visit one of the world's most famous literary homes and the setting for many of Beatrix's stories.

Just around the corner from Hill Top Farm is Tower Bank Arms pub. The Tower Bank Arms is featured in The Tales Of Jemima Puddleduck. You will find comfort with friendly professional service, quality fresh food and an extensive selection of traditional local ales and organic soft drinks and wines. Children welcome too.

From Hill Top, head north towards the honey pot village of Hawkshead. You can also catch the Mountain Goat 525 from Hill Top and onwards to Hawkshead and wander around this higgledy - piggledy place, which dates back to the 17th century. Visit the Beatrix Potter Gallery, which was the solicitor's office of her husband, William Heelis. Beatrix loved this pretty Lakeland village. From Hawkshead head north towards Ambleside, take a left and go up to the peaceful Tarn Hows. This beautiful tarn is surounded by a variety of trees and wildlife, Beatrix fell in love and bought it. Today it is owned by the National Trust who have provided a series of delightful walks around the tarn.

Hawkshead has flourished from its beginnings as a Medieval market town. Today Hawkshead, with its car-free village centre, is the perfect place for the visitor to experience the 'real' Lake District. This small village has a magical feel!
 

EveningEvening

For your evening stop, head over into the Coniston Valley. Yew Tree Farm was saved from the threat of developers when in 1930 Beatrix Potter purchased it as part of the large Monk Coniston Estate. This is the farm featured in the Beatrix Potter movie. Yew Tree Farm offers a special bed and breakfast experience in this historic farmhouse. Original oak features throughout, cosy and comfortable.

By Bus: Bus is probably one of the easiest ways to get to Hill Top. There is also a regular service (505) from Coniston, or Ambleside, with some buses going on to Windermere. If you are coming from Windermere or Bowness you can cruise or catch the Ferry across the Lake then the seasonal bus link (from the beginning of April through to the end of October) between Ferry House and Hill Top.

By Boat: The Windermere ferry between Bowness and Ferry House offers a low-cost, frequent and scenic link to Hill Top for visitors based in the Bowness and Windermere area. The footpath from Ferry House to Hill Top is comprehensively signed. The Cross Lakes Experience provides a package via Windermere Lake Cruises from Bowness to Hill Top using boat and bus.

By Bike: Hill Top is a short and relatively quiet ride down country lanes from Hawkshead, where cycle hire is available from the village post office or via bridleways from Ferry house.
There are cycle parking racks near the visitor ticket office.

On Foot: There are numerous footpaths and bridleways in the vicinity for you to explore including a direct off-road link from Ferry House.

By Car: B5286 and B5285 from Ambleside, 6 miles, B5285 from Coniston, 7 miles. The roads are narrow and can be very busy, please allow extra time to park during peak times.
