Kirkstone Rambler (517)Kirkstone Rambler (517)

Brace yourself for one of the most breathtaking rides in the Lake District! Jump aboard the Kirkstone Rambler and re-trace the route of mountain shepherds and later, horse-drawn carriages, as you climb from lakeside Bowness-on-Windermere to some of the finest mountain scenery in the area. Having called at Windermere Railway Station, you are quickly en route to Patterdale, via the magnificent Kirkstone Pass. At almost 1500 feet, it's the highest road pass in the Lake District. Everywhere you look, there are inspiring images. The steep ascent affords immediate and dramatic views of Windermere lake, followed by a glimpse of the perfectly situated, ancient village of Troutbeck. Climbing up towards the pass's summit, the sweeping slopes of High Street arise to your right, the northern end of the lake is spotted far below, escaped sheep wander on the roadside and an old coaching inn impossibly appears just beneath the summit. But the drama is not over yet! Just over the top, two perfect glaciated screes rise up on either side encompassing the square shaped Brotherswater ahead in the valley. Sidle down to the valley floor whilst enjoying the stunning views on either side and you will soon find yourself in the village of Patterdale, one of the starting points for the classic walk to Helvellyn.
