You can't afford to miss a circular tour of the Northern Lakes from Keswick to Caldbeck via an assortment of lovely villages and historic sites. The route passes through Applethwaite near Keswick and on to Mirehouse*, with its artistic and literary connections, beautifully situated, having grounds that extend to Bassenthwaite lake shore. Explore the nearby Dodd Wood - in spring, you can walk up to the osprey viewing platform. Bassenthwaite village is the next port of call, followed by Uldale and Ireby, travelling through outstanding scenery to the hidden village of Caldbeck, tucked away at the back of Skiddaw. Just up from the village duck pond is the award-winning restoration of Priest's Mill watermill which houses a café overlooking the river. The surrounding fells offer superb walking with alternative routes up to Skiddaw and Blencathra whilst a popular low level walk is found along the river up to The Howk, the ruins of an old bobbin mill set in a limestone gorge with beautiful waterfalls. The next stop is Hesket Newmarket with its wide main street and 18th century houses; it's famous for the unique real ales from the Hesket Newmarket Brewery. Returning to Keswick, via Mungrisdale and Threlkeld, there is an opportunity to hop off at the stop for Castlerigg Stone Circle to enjoy a walk to this historic site, set within a panorama of rugged hills.
