Skiddaw via Longside Edge

Route Essentials
Duration: 5 - 6 hours
Miles: 13 (21km)
Route Overview
A superb way to the summit of Skiddaw, which takes in the fine shapely ridge, Longside edge, that extends north from Carl Side and is separated from the main massif by the deep trench of Southerndale. From a distance the crest of Longside Edge looks deceptively narrow, suggesting that there may be some scrambling involved. Closer inspection reveals otherwise - the crest is exposed but walkable. Descent is down the steep grassy ridge that leads northeast to Bakestall and skirts Dead Crags to gain the access track by the impressive waterfall Whitewater Dash.
Route Details
1. Join the bridleway which leaves the road and zigzags south east to a fork at the lower end of Southerndale.
2. Take the right branch and follow it south up Ullock Pike then south east across Longside Edge and finally east up Carl Side.
3. From Carlside drop north east down to the col and either climb direct onto the summit ridge (South Top) or follow the zigzag. On the ridge follow it north to Skiddaw's summit.
4. Head north to the North Top of Skiddaw then descend north east to Bakestall.
5. Start descending from Bakestall by heading a short distance east to avoid the top of Dead Crags then descend north east alongside the fence to the Skiddaw House access track. Turn left onto the track and follow it north west to the road near Peter House Farm.
6. Turn left onto the road and follow it south west back to the start near High Side.
