natural environment & wildlife...

There is a very good reason for William Wordsworth describing Grasmere in Cumbria as ‘the loveliest spot that man hath found', and for the county acting as inspiration for a great number of literary and artistic talents over the years.

Cumbria is certainly one of the UK's most stunningly beautiful destinations boasting a wealth of world-class natural and historic assets including; two National Parks - one of which, the Lake District National Park, is the most populated in the UK; three Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB); over 130 Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI); over 20 Conservation areas; Britain's Favourite View; Britain's Best Place for Wildlife and Britain's Best Road; one long stretch of coastline; one World Heritage Site of Hadrian's Wall, which is the most important monument to be built by Romans in Britain - (although the Lake District National Park is currently seeking this recognition); 214 fells; 16 major lakes; over 200 tarns; 2,175 miles of footpaths; and 7,441 kilometres of Public Rights of Way.

Welcoming over 15 million visitors to the county each year can certainly take its toll on the environment and its and we are committed to working with the tourism industry and visitors alike to ensure that our precious natural assets and their inhabitants are preserved for future generations of visitors.

So visit Cumbria and be inspired.
