green tourism...
Cumbria and the Lake District receives thousands of visitors every year to enjoy the countryside and its wildlife.
Being the most beautiful corner of England is something that we are very proud of.....but it is not something we take for granted. To preserve this unique environment
is an ongoing process and it is important that we act now to care for the future. We can all do something positive to help our natural environment whilst on holiday. Here in Cumbria, many organisations and businesses are committed to helping everyone get the most out of our fantastic natural assets and also helping people give a little back.

Partnership projects

Friar's Crag
Friar's Crag, Keswick's beautiful lakeshore path is one of the best loved, most walked upon routes in England. The winter rains wash the path surface away each year and the many visitors also contribute to the erosion problem. The National Trust are helping to give the footpath a more permanent and substantial surface which resists flooding and erosion. At the same time they are upgrading the route to wheelchair standard for to improve access for all.
Sustainability programme

Cumbria Outdoors
Cumbria Outdoors works with groups of primary school children, and helps them think about climate issues. As part of their stay, they visit a windmill and do resource efficiency activities (simple and fun environmental audits). These activities are also tied to a strong bio-diversity element. By educating children in climate and sustainability issues, we are helping to change the actions and attitudes of the next generation towards the planet.
