Thornthwaite Farm,
LA20 6DF

Thornthwaite Farm is set amidst the beautiful scenery of the Woodland Valley. We have five cottages including our 4 star Gold Award barn conversion and a luxury Log Cabin all with stunning views of the Lakeland fells. The cottages and Log Cabin are ideally situated for those wishing to go walking or cycling or just relaxing, with many walks from your cottage door.
The farm provides a unique diversity of landscape, including lowland flower meadows, ancient woods, rocky outcrops, streams and rivers. The farm also offers a diverse range of wildlife and fauna including rare orchids and mosses including a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a Special Area of Conservation. We have 150 acres of beautiful woodland to explore, which are a vivid carpet of bluebells in the spring.

Additionally, guests regularly enjoy going badger watching at dusk, watching the fox cubs playing or catching a glimpse of the barn owls out hunting. We also have available to guests our own trout fishing lake and river bank fishing.

Thornthwaite is located within easy reach of all the major attractions, however if you need to get away from it all and relax in a friendly atmosphere our farm is perfect.

“Excellent accommodation, fantastic value for money”

We have recently spent 5 nights a Thornthwaite farm, and can not rate it highly enough.
We arrived a couple of hours early as we had a long journey and had misjudged the timings. When we arrived Mrs Jackson was not around, however we found her house and her son was very accommodating, taking us to our cottage and making us feel welcome. As soon as Mrs Jackson returned home, she came and introduced herself to us. You could not meet a more friendly lady!! She certainly makes you feel at home.
To be honest we spent a lot of time either out doing activities, or walking and exploring the farm, so we did not see much of the staff. They were around should you need them, and were always polite and helpful when we did chat with them.
The cottage itself was delightful. We stayed in stable cottage (sleeps 2) and were very comfortable. The fixtures, fittings and furniture are all good quality, and you can tell that a lot of time and love has gone into renovating the accommodation.
The farm itself is lovely. We only explored a small amount of the hills and fields and did not get around to finding the fishing lake and didn't explore the woods too much.
There is so much to do here that we would recommend ThornThwaite Farm to anyone. The couple that were staying next door to us had two small children and then looked thoroughly warn out each evening after being able to run around safely and securely.
If you are looking for a quite, peaceful place to stay and relax, set in a good location to go and explore the lakes then this is the place for you. I would highlight that this is a working farm, so there can be some noise in the morning (we were woken up by sheep shearing outside the window one morning) and the staff are not going to always be available straight away. That being said, if you are happy to look after yourselves and get a truly authentic countryside experience then I don't think you can go wrong with this place. You are far enough away that you can enjoy total peace and quiet, whilst still being close enough to access local villages where there are shops, pubs and restaurants. Expect to use the car a lot and be prepared for very rural single track roads - it is the lake district after all!
All in all Thornthwaite farm is excellent value for money, set in a great location, with all of the amenities and facilities that you could need for your self catered holiday. We are going to be going back again the same time next year for sure, and will use Thornthwaite Farm every time we are in the area.
