Wildlife Illustration Class - Simon Williams SB at Quirky Workshops @ Greystoke Cycle Cafe
This course is set out to master using watercolours and perhaps gouache in illustrating a wildlife subject, whether from photos or specimens. It is also quite common for students to trace the pictures first - the class is not about an ability to draw but learning in depth about painting techniques - so please don't be put off believing you cannot learn to paint because you cannot draw - not true at all.
Gouache can be used in different styles either working light to dark, or the reverse, dark to light building layers up a bit more opaquely. It is more versatile then traditional watercolour for being able to over paint light colour onto darker tones. It depends on the subject matter as to which way is appropriate and this course will help you look and observe details, mix colour and application techniques. Building up opaque layers is a careful process but is ideal for finely detailed work such as botanical illustration and a lot of technique will be ‘dry brush’ to render detail.
Simon Williams, a highly accomplished botanical artists and a member of the SBA will be coming to Greystoke from Dorset. Class sizes will be limited to 10 people so that people can get the most from a class. There are 3 days planned on each visit
Day One is for Botanical Painting, Day Two is for Wildlife Painting and Day 3 is a follow up day for both, but is also open to new students who may not have attended the other days.
Often people attend all three and just stick to painting one subject, with Simon there to watch over - whether botanical or wildlife, which is fine. Please note however that Simons demonstrations and group teaching will be specific to the days allocated.
All days require a bit of patience as this course requires a tight rather than loose style of painting, but is open to all levels.
Gouache in very simple terms is watercolour paint with a white base added.
