Enjoy England Awards for Excellence 2011

The Cottage in the Wood was awarded Cumbria Tourism "Taste of Cumbria" Award 2010 and has gone on to win a Silver Award for the Taste of England in the 2011 Enjoy England Awards.

This former 17th Century coaching inn is tucked away in the heart of the Whinlatter forest, in one of the most beautiful and dramatic areas of the Lake District national park. Just five miles from Keswick, it is in an area that inspired the famous author and fell walker, A W Wainwright to write that ‘the North Western fells are the most delectable of them all'. This great little hide-away has an award winning restaurant which offers a delicious menu at very reasonable prices cooked with passion and flair along with nine cosy rooms, a warm welcome and amazing mountain views. It's simply the perfect get-away and it won't break the bank.

Situated between the lakes of Bassenthwaite, Derwentwater, Buttermere and Crummock Water in the heart of Whinlatter Forest Park, The Cottage in the Wood is in England's only true mountain forest, which is home to the Bassenthwaite ospreys, a particularly scenic mountain-bike trail and an army of red squirrels.

Owners Liam and Kath Berney offer their guests a genuinely warm welcome and superb locally sourced food, sometimes foraged in the surrounding forest and cooked with imagination and passion. Liam says, "We use the best local ingredients and make everything from scratch including our own bread, pasta and ice cream. Cooking really good food is our passion and we like to deliver value for money. Therefore, we are delighted to have won this award and hope it will highlight the fact that it is not just breath-taking scenery that visitors can expect here in the beautiful Lake District, but also wonderful food too."
