Dalemain Historic House & Gardens
Dalemain is a fine mixture of medieval, Tudor and early Georgian architecture. The imposing Georgian façade strikes the visitor immediately but in the cobbled courtyard the atmosphere of the north country Tudor manor is secure. The present owner's family have lived at Dalemain since 1679 and have collected china, furniture and family portraits. Visitors can see the grand Drawing Rooms with 18thC panelling, also the Nursery and Housekeeper's Room. The Norman pele tower contains the regimental collection of the Westmorland and Cumberland Yeomanry. The house is full of the paraphernalia of a well-established family house which is still very much lived in by the family.
The 16thC Great Barn holds a collection of agricultural bygones and a Fell Pony Museum. Do not miss Mrs Mouse's house on the back stairs or the Nursery with toys from all ages.
Then enjoy the delightful and fascinating 5-acre Plantsman's garden set against the picturesque splendour of the Lakeland Fells and parkland. Walk around the richly planted herbaceous boarders, the rose walk with nearly 200 old-fashioned roses. The garden also features a magnificent Abies Cephalonica, a Tudor Knot Garden and a wild garden with a profusion of flowering shrubs and wild flowers. In the early summer, enjoy the breathtaking display of blue Himalayan poppies. Take in the views on the glorious woodland walk high above Dacre Beck.
The licensed Medieval hall tearoom is open throughout the day serving teas and coffees, light lunches and snacks.
Something of interest for all the family.
