Not surprisingly Cumbria does lakeside really well, which is good news if you are into water sports or just like relaxing on the shore. White Cross Bay Holiday Park and Marina Windermere is ideal for watersports enthusiasts, with boat launching facilities. As well as having pitches for touring caravans, you can hire holiday vans and lodges. Low Wray National Trust Campsite nestles on the peaceful western shore of Lake Windermere. As well as idyllic lake and mountain views, there is on-site launching for non-powered craft.

If you want to camp right at the water's edge, Waterside House near Pooley Bridge lies on the northern shore of Ullswater. Peaceful and relaxing, it makes a great base for land and water activities, and there are Canadian canoes, sea cycles and rowing boats for hire. And with more than 1 km of exclusive lake frontage, Hill of Oaks Lodge and Caravan Park has 5 jetties, boat launching and easy access to watersports nearby. Fishing is also permitted.

Camping holidays are perfect for family fun and the Lake District, Cumbria boasts a wealth of parks and sites to choose from. Most offer a variety of facilities to keep the whole family entertained, although there are also lots of quieter sites - perfect for a quieter family break.

Cumbria is farming country and camping on a farm can give you an insight into farming life. Waterside House farm and campsite near Pooley Bridge have been run by the same family for five generations. It is a working farm and home to a flock of Swaledale Ewes, who spend most of their time on the nearby Fell . At certain times of the year you may see the sheep being dipped, sheared or even the birth of a lamb. Gillhead Farm Camping and Touring Park at Troutbeck near Penrith is another family-friendly site on a working hill farm. A log cabin for campers provides an undercover eating and meeting area, complete with TV microwave and undercover barbeque facilities. Burns Farm Caravan Park and Campsite is also on a working sheep farm and you are bound to meet Dave and his dogs at some point during your stay.

Nestling in the valleys or perched on the fellside, there are lots of campsites in Cumbria offering gorgeous scenery and perfect peace and quiet. Woodclose Park is in a quiet and secluded location in a slight hollow just a stone's throw picturesque market town of Kirkby Lonsdale and the pretty river Lune. If you'd prefer to head closer to 'the lakes', The Quiet Site in Ullswater offers quality family accommodation in the heart of the Lake District National Park.  But for a real sense of being away from it all, head for Wasdale National Trust Campsite. Accessed by a single-track road, it lies in the heart of one of the remote western valleys close to England's deepest lake, Wastwater, and to England's highest mountain, Scafell Pike.
