Quirky facts about Appleby

The Helm Wind
The Helm Wind - the only named wind in the UK is a strong, cold and roaring wind that originates on the eastern side of the Pennines and gusts down the escarpment creating turbulence. Sometimes a white bank of cloud can be seen lower down; known as the Helm Bar. Locals say that when the Helm Bar is black, rainfall will ensue and when it is white, a dry, harsh wind will follow.

George Washington
The father, uncle and two half-brothers of the first American president, George Washington, all attended Appleby Grammar School.
Piped water
The village of Hilton apparently enjoyed the first piped water supply in the country. The stone drinking troughs and pumps on the green were installed by the Quaker-owned London Lead Company.
