winter walking & climbing...

Climber on Central Gully, Great End

They say that an Englishman's favourite conversational topic is the weather, and given the Cumbrian climate there's often plenty to talk about. A good, dry autumn gives us some of the finest walking conditions the Lake District can offer, however for the hard core of walkers (and climbers) the real question is; what's the winter going to bring?

For many of us the Lakeland winter brings out the best in our mountains. The onset of cold weather sees fewer people on the ridges and summits but those that you do meet are revelling in the experience, crampons on feet, axe in hand. Enthusiasts across the country study the weather charts, waiting for the right conditions that transform our mountains into a winter wonderland.

It's now that well-designed outdoor gear comes into its own. A fun summer's walk in shorts and T shirt can become a more serious-feeling expedition that starts and finishes in the dark.  Lightweight waterproofs won't cope with blizzard conditions but a fully-specified winter jacket allows you not only to survive, but actually to enjoy the situation. You'll need effective insulation; not just fleece but maybe down or synthetic too. Map and compass skills become essential, augmented perhaps by the miracle of GPS. Footwear becomes a serious factor, both for cold-weather comfort and underfoot security. Plus those crampons and axes may be needed - do you know how to use them properly?
