Keswick, at the heart of the Northern Lake District, lies amidst a dramatic backdrop of mountains and lakes. To the north are the smooth outlines of the Skiddaw massif. The prominent peaks of Grisedale Pike and Causey Pike to the west contrast with the rugged volcanic rocks of Walla and Falcon Crags to the east. Southwards, the glistening waters of Derwentwater beckon towards Borrowdale.
Keswick developed as a market town on the proceeds of farming, mining and quarrying in the local area. The arrival of the railway in 1864 heralded the arrival of tourism in Keswick.
Today, Keswick is a dynamic market town offering a wide range of shops and facilities for the visitor. There are numerous outdoor activities to be pursued, from climbing to canoeing, power boating to paragliding; and the town hosts a dynamic programme of festival events throughout the year.
