Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway

Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway

Reviews

    Details

'Swallows and Amazons' was the first in a series of children's adventure books which Arthur Ransome wrote when he lived in South Lakeland. On this tour we look at the life of Arthur Ransome and seek out the locations that feature in his books.

The tour starts with a nostalgic steam train journey to Lakeside Station, Ransome's 'Foot of the Lake'. We then travel through beautiful woodland arriving at Esthwaite Water, an idyllic photo stop.

Heading next for Coniston Water we pause at Ransome sites en-route before a lunch stop beside the lake.

An afternoon cruise on the Coniston Launch is met at Brantwood by your guide and we travel down the peaceful east side of the lake to find the locations of 'Wild Cat Island', 'The Amazon River' and 'Octopus Lagoon'. We'll visit the lovely Rusland valley and the churchyard that became Ransome's final resting place.

Returning to Windermere there's wonderful views over the lake from high up on Gummers How and finally, above the Winster Valley, we find the birthplace of 'Swallows and Amazons'.
