Fitzroy String Quartet

Fitzroy String Quartet

Haydn String Quartet in E major, Op.54 No.3 22¼'
Debussy String Quartet in G minor, Op.10 25'
Tchaikovsky String Quartet No.1 in D major, Op.11 27¼'

From the same year as the E minor Trio (see Monday), 1788, comes the three Op.54 quartets dedicated to the leader of the second violins in Haydn's orchestra, Johann Tost – but not for his playing skills: rather, his efforts as salesman to Paris publishers! Debussy's sole contribution to the genre was described by the composer Guy Ropartz as "dominated by the influence of young Russia… there are poetic themes, rare sonorities, the first two movements being particularly remarkable." A decade earlier, the teenage Debussy had been engaged as piano tutor to the children of Mme von Meck, Tchaikovsky's patron. Tchaikovsky D major Quartet – with its renowned Andante cantabile movement – also takes us back to Monday, for it was Rubinstein who arranged the benefit concert for which it was composed.
This concert is given in thanksgiving for the life of Doris Hancock.
