The walk starts in St. Bees, an ancient community with deep rooted ecclesiastical and scholastic foundations and follows the coast to St. Bees Head; four miles of towering and precipitous cliffs of red sandstone which are home to countless seabirds. From here the route passes through some West Cumbrian villages before reaching the green hill of Dent, an excellent viewpoint with a panorama that includes the Cumbrian coastal plains, the Isle of Man and the Lakeland Fells, and continues onto Ennerdale Bridge, a quiet hamlet and convenient halting place at the end of the first day!
