Farfield Mill Arts & Heritage Centre
Nestling between the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales, and in the shadow of the glorious Howgill hills, a rescued Farfield Mill opened its doors in April 2001 to an exciting new life as Farfield Mill Arts and Heritage Centre. This followed extensive refurbishment after Farfield ceased production as a woollen mill in the early 1990's after 156 years of textile production.
The Centre is now a favourite visitor attraction for those visiting the Lakes and Dales. An unrivalled selection of high quality art and craft is always on display. Farfield Mill's resident artists can often be seen working in their studios creating exceptional work which is available for sale.
Two formal galleries, the Dover Gallery and the Howgill Gallery, show a changing programme of high quality temporary exhibitions, while other areas across the arts centre provide opportunities for smaller exhibitions or installations.
The fourth floor is home to the Mill's collection of floor and hand looms and you can often see weavers busy at the looms, working on their own projects. They are usually happy to talk about their work and what they are creating. Lacemakers and Rag Ruggers are also often in situ, demonstrating their craft and happily chatting to visitors.
Farfield is rapidly gaining a reputation for creative textiles in its many forms. The next stage of development will take the Mill forward on its journey towards becoming a centre of excellence for textiles: art, design and manufacture.
