Being Human at Base Camp

Being Human at Base Camp

Details

In April 2016, Cumbrian artist Derek Eland, became the first ever artist in residence at Everest Base Camp, living in a temporary community with 1000 people, as they prepared to climb to the summit. This exhibition, which opens at Rheged ahead of a world tour, uses photography, handwritten accounts collected from people at Base Camp using the artist’s unique “diary room” approach, social media and video to tell the story of Derek’s 6 week residency as he tried to understand what it was like to be ‘human’ at Base Camp.
