Kendal is a pioneering Teaching Museum - where history and nature meet. One of the oldest museums in the UK, founded in 1796. Since 1918 housed in a beautiful historic building, once a wool warehouse. The museum comprises of four galleries:

The Kendal and Westmorland Gallery houses our local social history, including information and memorabilia relating to Alfred Wainwright from when he was an Honorary Curator. Also a wide ranging Archaeology collection.

The World Wildlife Gallery houses on the largest natural history collections in Europe, including our Polar Bear.

The Lake District Natural History Gallery has one of the largest collections of minerals from the Lake District and Northern England, along with local natural history.

The Temporary Exhibition Gallery has a rolling program of exhibitions.

The shop features local artists' work, gifts, toys and books. The cafe offers a selection of drinks and snacks in a welcoming and friendly environment.
