Cycle Route: Hawkshead-Crosslands-Graythwaite-Cunsey-Sawrey-Hawkshead

Route Details

From Hawkshead post office in the centre of the village head south, past the Sun Inn to a T-junction. Go straight on signed ‘NewbyBridge’, passing by Esthwaite water on the left.

Turn right signed ‘Dale Park’ to ride uphill, steeply at first with grand views of the fells from the summit. Descend into the quiet valley of Dale Park, with lovely wild flower meadows in the late spring and early summer.

Bear left, signed ‘Rusland Cross’ into the Rusland Valley.

Turn left, signed ‘ Crossland’ to climb out of the valley bearing right at the T-junction after about 1 mile. At the top of the hill there are grand views across the valley westwards. Descend to Graythwaite.

Turn Left signed ‘Hawkshead’ , then next right signed ‘Cunsey’. Take care descending the steep hill to Windermere lake shore.

Turn left, onto a bridleway by Cunsey Beck. Turn right onto the road at the end of the bridleway.

Turn right by Eel House . Bear right, signed ‘Near Sawrey’.

Turn left signed ‘Hawkshead’ (or turn right for Beatrix Potter’s Hilltop, the retrace. Return to Hawkshead.
