Tour of Low Yewdale

Route Essentials
Cycle Route: Coniston - Low Yewdale - Monk Coniston - Coniston
Duration: 1 - 2 hours
Miles: 3 (5km)
Route Overview
Each of the three roads out of Coniston village are traced for part of their route by cycle paths. They offer traffic free cycling along easy travel tracks passing through some very pleasant landscape. The one alongside the A593 Ambleside Road and the one along the B5285 Hawkshead Road connect with the bridleway between Low Yewdale and Boon Crag Farm. This bridleway can be used to create a circular mountain bike ride that is ideal for both beginners and families. There is one short section along the Ambleside road that needs care, particularly with young children, but that aside it is a generally safe route.
Route Details
1. From the main car park in Coniston cross the junction then turn right along the B5285 Hawkshead Road. After 250m take the left turn just before the bridge. Follow this road to join the A593. Turn right onto it and follow it towards Ambleside for 250m (watch out for traffic) to the start of the cycle path at Far End. Follow the cycle path as it rises and falls through woodland for around 1km to an access point by the A593.
2. Drop down to the A593 and cross it to join the bridleway to Low Yewdale. The bridleway is followed past the farm at Low Yewdale and over Yewdale Beck. It climbs slightly then descends to pass Boon Crag Farm and join the B5285 Hawkshead Road.
3. Turn right on to the B5285 then immediately leave it and join the cycle path on its West side. This cycle path is then followed all the way back to Coniston.
