Gondola – A Little Piece of Venice in the Lakes

Gondola – A Little Piece of Venice in the Lakes

Details

Find out why a little piece of Venice can be found on Coniston Water. Steam Yacht Gondola was built by the Victorians based on a Venetian design in the mid 19th century and carried tourists around the lake from 1860 to 1936. It was later sunk after having been used as a houseboat, and was then subsequently raised from the bed of the lake by the National Trust who rebuilt the boat and re-launched it into passenger service in 1980.

Enjoy this entertaining talk on board Steam Yacht Gondola with National Trust curator, Harvey Wilkinson, who will explain the significance of Gondola as a symbol of key turning points in Victorian history including the start of the conservation movement here in the Lake District.

A relaxed and informal evening cruise including a glass of wine and nibbles.
