Carlisle Photo Festival are launching a new and exciting travelling outdoor exhibition, free in Carlisle City Centre. The ‘Visualising the Animal’ exhibition has been produced in collaboration with the Visualising Conferences held by the University of Cumbria.
This new travelling exhibition has never been seen before and consists of contemporary photography by 23 UK and International Photographers. After visiting Carlisle, the exhibition will travel to other destinations including Workington and Durham.
The idea of the “Animal” is vast and varied. The photographs explore the many different ways in which people relate and interact with animals; from domestic to scientific, as well as more abstract ideas of how we view animals in captivity or as artefacts in museums. We cannot live without animals. Visually, the importance of our relationship to animals is reflected in a rich history of animal imagery, from cave paintings to contemporary art.
How, then, does photography portray our relationships with animals in society today?
