Following the success of previous events, this year’s 10-day programme will be held in the city centre between Saturday 19 August and Monday 28 August. The free festivities will celebrate the city’s history and heritage and will link in with the ancient proclamation of the Great Fair, to be held at the Market Cross on Saturday 26 August at 10:00.
The Proclamation is a declaration of Carlisle City Council’s rights to hold an annual Fair in August, originally granted to the citizens of Carlisle in 1352 by Edward III. A procession including The Mayor of Carlisle, Sword and Mace Bearers and other Civic Dignitaries will make its way from St. Cuthbert’s Church to the Market Cross in the city centre.
The Pageant Puppet Parade and Funday activities are planned within the city centre’s pedestrianised area on Saturday 19 August.
The community parade will be the exciting centre-piece of the event. Giant puppets depicting key historic characters will parade through the city centre.
The ten-day Pageant programme will also include Best of Carlisle Market stalls from Saturday 19 to Tuesday 22 August, a Carlisle Fringe Festival from Sunday 20 to Tuesday 22 August and an International Market from Market Place Europe, which will run from Wednesday 23 to Monday 28 August.
The Best of Carlisle Market will include a diverse range of stalls each day. The open-air market is organised in partnership with Food Carlisle and will include a variety of local producers, businesses and organisations. There will also be street entertainment for the whole family.
