Schubert's first set of three violin sonatas date from 1816, sunny and youthful and clearly influenced by his admiration for Mozart. By contrast, Elgar's is an autumnal work, full of 'wood magic', with echoes in the first movement of the Aeolian harp he had wedged in the cottage's window frame. Arguably the most popular of all Fauré’s chamber works, the A major Sonata makes its first-ever appearance at LDSM; Saint-Saëns wrote of it "a magic floats above everything, encompassing the whole work… With this, Fauré takes his place among the masters.” To close, a Muscovite's take on Gershwin's story of the crippled beggar transformed by his unexpected and improbable love.
