Supported by the Romanian Cultural Institute

Romanian-born pianist Alexandra Vaduva brings our Young Artists strand to a close with a programme featuring WW1 music by her homeland's greatest composer, whose piano works she is currently researching for her PhD at the Royal Academy of Music. Romanian influences also pervade Bartók's work from the same time. From Schubert's final piano sonata, heard last Saturday, we come to his earliest completed sonata, written as he turned 19.
It was the poet Rellstab (better known for Schubert's use of his texts in Schwanengesang) who was responsible for the title by which Beethoven's famous sonata is now universally known, in likening the effect of the first movement to that of moonlight shining upon Lake Lucerne… but then, he'd never seen Windermere…
This concert is dedicated to the memory of Teresa Shelton.
